Oakland: The International - East Oakland Finally Seeing A Mixed-Use Development?

Other than the Fruitvale BART parking lot development, East Oakland is not seeing very much development activity even as other parts of Oakland are inundated with new proposals for mixed-use and housing projects. One exception is an 8-story mixed-use building that is proposed for the very northern end of East Oakland. Just a few blocks south of Lake Merritt on the corner of International Boulevard and 5th Avenue, this project would include 37 condos along with just under 7,000 square feet of ground floor retail space. The project is developed by local company Golden Stone Investment Corporation and designed by YHLA Architects. I have been unable to find many details about this proposal but it looks like it will be a market-rate development.

With the increasing popularity of Lake Merritt and Downtown Oakland, proposals in this part of town are inevitable despite the fact that this area is still considered off the beaten path by many people. Though not as high profile a project as the nearby Lake Merritt Tower, it will be interesting to see if there will be any pushback from the community about this development. Though I understand concerns about rising rents and displacement, this looks like a sensible development that will bring some much needed housing units to the East Bay.
