Oakland: 612 18th St - The Jefferson Mixed-Use Building Could Break Ground Soon

It's hard to keep track of all the newly proposed mixed-use buildings in downtown Oakland these days and here's another one to add to that list. This project is brought to you by Bay West Development and Kahn Design Associates and would rise on the corner of 18th and Jefferson Streets on what is currently a small commercial building and surface parking lot. A total of 80 housing units along with ground floor retail space are planned for the 6-story building. Though initially approved by the city in early 2014, the project was revised in June 2014 to increase the number of housing units (from 69 to 80 units) and to add an additional floor. Permits are currently being reviewed by the city's building department which means the project is likely to break ground in the coming months. If we indeed see shovels hit the dirt, this would be one the first market-rate housing projects to make it to the construction phase in downtown Oakland since the last housing boom in the mid to late 2000s.
