Berkeley: 2150 Berkeley Way/Berkeley Way West - New Academic Building Coming to Downtown Berkeley

Shattuck is seeing quite a bit of development these days and it looks like we may very well see another major development come to Berkeley's main street as a UC Berkeley-owned surface parking lot is slated to finally be developed.
Unlike most developments going up in the city right now, this lot is not slated for a housing development but rather for academic space for UC Berkeley's School of Education, School of Public Health as well as the Department of Psychology. Retail spaces would be included along Shattuck Ave to help active the sidewalks in the area. The building would rise next to the recently completed Energy Biosciences Building and would replace the existing surface lot on Shattuck Ave between Berkeley Way and Hearst Ave.

Designs from the building come from WRNS Studio which is known for its sustainable designs and has worked with several universities in the Bay Area. Renderings show an attractively designed building with the larger, more imposing facade facing Berkeley Way on the south side of the lot. The 8-story structure steps down to 5 stories on the north side which helps to create a transition from the denser, taller downtown area to the more low-rise North Berkeley/Gourmet Ghetto. The building will be across the street from a proposed 12-story residential building, significantly increasing density in this transit rich area.
If everything goes according to plan, this development should be underway in the summer of 2015 with a completion date scheduled for Fall 2017.
