Berkeley: Helios - 1698 University - The Mixed-Use Conversion of University Ave Continues

It seems as though there isn't a block of University Ave that doesn't have a mixed-use building either completed, planned or under construction. Not that I'm complaining - the street still seems dominated by the many car-centric restaurants and motels making it a fairly uninviting place for pedestrians. The proposal of the week is a project tenatitively titled Helios which would take over a lot at the corner of University Ave & McGee Ave that has sat empty for at least 5 years. The proposal includes 36 units and about 2,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor in an attractively designed 5-story building. The design comes from Sacramento-based architectural firm Mogavero Notestine Associates. The project just had its final design review in March which means construction could just be a few months away.
