Berkeley: 824 University - Yet Another Mixed-Use Building Planned for West Berkeley

An area that is already being transformed by multiple mixed-use buildings is set to get another mixed-user, this time at the corner of 6th & University. This development will be immediately east of the currently under construction Aquatic development and, indeed, it looks to be an unofficial phase 2 of that project. Also designed by Trachtenberg Architects, the proposed building will include a similar design with clean lines and an earth tone-colored facade. Still fairly early on in the approval process, current plans call for 48 apartments along with about 2,750 square feet of retail space. At 5 stories tall, the building would certainly stand out on a corner that is currently dominated by a gas station and multiple low-rise commercial buildings. Hopefully, this proposal will spur additional developments in the area to fill in the remaining dead zones - especially that giant parking lot on 4th Street across from Spenger's Seafood.
