4901 Broadway: Major Development Coming to Temescal/Rockridge Border

Another week, another major development proposed somewhere in Oakland. This time we're looking at what is currently a very desolate corner at 51st and Broadway. This intersection is currently a hub for chain shopping and through-traffic but not much else. The proposed 5-story development on the Temescal/Rockridge border would certainly help make this a more inviting area. This attractive mixed-use development would add a healthy 126 residential units as well as some ground floor retail space.

Though on a high traffic corner, this development will benefit not only from its proximity to the ever-popular College Avenue corridor in Rockridge but also the newly redeveloped Rockridge Shopping Center across the street. These two developments are going to transform this car-centric part of town into a much more pleasant, walkable and attractive area. The new buffered bike lanes also don't hurt and will hopefully be used by the residents of this building to get to their jobs in Downtown Oakland (and beyond).

I'm very excited that we're starting to see major deadzones eliminated along Broadway. Hopefully, one day soon we can have a strong "Main Street" (or dare I say, Market Street) that connects some of the major areas of Oakland in a seamless, pedestrian and bike-friendly way.
